While we come across information on how we can have a good night’s sleep every now and then, we are seldom aware of how an insufficient sleep can affect our health and well-being.

Because of paper works either from work or school and other household obligations, everyday is like a race against time. Add to it the temptations of the computer and the TV shows airing late at night, and the parties and gimmicks. At the end of the day, all the hours that should have gone to a good night’s sleep go to all of these, slowly robbing your body off a deserving rest and making you feel drowsy the next day. If you are accustomed to this way of life, be warned. All the bad things you do to your body have their own consequences, and they could be more serious than you thought.

I. The Social And Economic Costs

While there are health risks when you get a few hours of sleep each night, we cannot ignore the fact that its dire risks affect the nation’s economy. According to a report from the Institute Pf Medicine, an arm of National Academy of Sciences, 50-70 million Americans have chronic sleep problems, with as many as 30 million suffering from chronic insomnia.

The result? Motor vehicle accidents due to tired rivers cost at least $48 billion a year, while fatigue cost $150 billion each year in lost productivity and mishaps.

The report, entitled. “Sleep Deprivation and Sleep Disorders: An Unmet Public Health Problem”, says that in recent decades, loss of sleep has increased due to TV shows, computers, and longer work days among adults.

For those suffering from insomnia, that means more days off work for you. A study led by Virginia Godet-Cayre at the Health Economics Research in France proves that workers who had difficulty falling asleep missed an average of 5.8 days of work a year, compared to only 2.4 days missed by “good sleepers.” The team tracked down the work histories of 369 workers who had insomnia and 369 workers who were getting the right amount of sleep. The study, published in the February issue of Sleep, says that 50% of the insomniac group had at least a time of absence over a 2-year period, against to 34% of the other group.

II. Teens And Sleep

These days it’s not just the adults who are lacking sleep. The National Sleep Foundation reported that only 20% of adolescents in USA are getting the recommended 9 hours of sleep at night. That figure is alarming, because it shows that
millions of them have problems concentrating in classes, are getting late for school, or are sleepy when driving.

III. If You Want To Lose Weight, Don’t Just Focus On Your Diet

Want to know a secret? The road to a good figure is not just eating food in low quantity and exercising on a regular basis;
it’s having a proper lifestyle. I’m not a fitness expert, mind you, but health studies are giving more and more evidence
supporting a link between how many hours of sleep you get and your tendency to be obese.

A study led by Dr. Steven Heymsfield of Columbia University amd St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, and James
Gangwisch, a Columbia epidemiologist, showed that those who had less that 4 hours of sleep were more likely to be obese by
73%, while those with an average of 5 hours of sleep had 50% greater risk. Those who only had 6 hours had 23% more.

The reason? Blame it on grehlin, a substance that makes people want to eat more food.

If people don’t have the recommended amount of shut-eye, their leptin levels are lowered.

Leptin is a blood protein that suppresses their appetite, and seems to affect how their body had eaten enough.

So don’t think that dieting is the only way for a nice build; include getting sufficient sleep in your regimen from now on.

IV. And More Diseases, Too

If you’re already tired of reading about the dire consequences you will face when you don’t give yourself the right amount of
rest, here are a few more for your information.

When your body is deprived of the sleep it needs, your chances of getting coronary heart disease double compared to people who have an adequate amount of sleep.

And if you’re a male, read on. You’d be interested to know that men who are sleep deprived are risking themselves for an erectile dysfunction. That happens when their testosterone levels drop due to a few hours of sleep, making it more difficult to maintain an erection.

For older people aged 53-93, there’s a risk of developing diabetes. That’s what a study co-authored by Dr. Daniel Gottlieb, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University claimed.

Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the findings concluded that elders who slept fewer than 5 hours were 2.5
times more likely to acquire the sweet disease against those who had 6 hours, who had chances 1.7 times lower.

But don’t think that sleeping too much will solve the problem, though. The study showed that overslept elders – those who had more than 9 hours of sleep – had chances 1.7 times higher.

Lastly, sleeplessness causes an individual to have an impaired spatial learning, such as getting to a new destination. This
finding, which appeared on the Journal of Neurophysiology, suggested that during the process of spatial learning, new brain cells are being produced in an area of the brain called Hippocampus. Sleep is important in helping these brain cells survive.

V. Conclusion

We all know that sleep plays a major part in one’s overall well-being, and now that we know exactly what we are likely facing
when we have lack of it, where do we go from here?

It seems that more research is needed in the area of sleep medicine, and public awareness must be raised for everyone to understand that, despite all the obligations, late night TV shows and caffeinated drinks, getting sufficient sleep is really,
really important for everyone, young or old. And as for you reading this article, I bet you agree.

Keeping ones self thoroughly clean does not only entail the outside part of the body. Although it is most commonly presumed that when we should stay clean, we should take regular washing and bathing. Bathing and washing have become synonymous with being clean and healthy.

One more thing we need to know is that it is not only the outer part of the body that needs cleaning. Many people still do not know that flushing waste and other toxins from the body is also a form of cleaning. Most people who are uninformed of this suffer from indigestion, constipation and other internal diseases that usually land them in a hospital.

Most people, though they claim to be health conscious, tend to overlook the internal cleanliness of the body. Most of the time, we hear people going to the gyms and spas to refresh, relax, and to be clean. Thats what health spas, health salons and gyms are around for, to offer physical and external clean-up and tone-up. Then what about the internal cleanliness? How do we really get to clean our internal selves?

A lot of people have normal waste flushing early in the morning. Yet there are more who have problems in waste flushing or disposal. It is not enough to wait when nature calls to dispose of our internal wastes. There are actually ways in which we, ourselves, could initiate the process of waste disposal of our internal system.

When a part of our external body gets dirty, the first thing we do is to wipe it off or wash it with soap and water to be clean again. That is basic instinct. However, in the case of our internal system, we do not really notice when a part gets dirty. Or do we ever think they get dirty at all? Most of the time we dont, but in reality, they do. And once a part of the internal system gets dirty, they usually lead from minor to major diseases that can cause us our health. It is time we learn how to clean our internal system.

There is a process in cleansing and stimulating the alimentary canal or the passage of the food. Physically, digestion starts in the mouth. We know that the mouth gets dirty after every meal and so we brush our teeth. Same goes for the passage of the food in the internal system. Once it gets dirty, however, we do not usually do something to clean it up. We do wait for when nature calls and then we go to the bathroom. Now, we can start cleaning up our internal alimentary canal by flushing out the toxins and not wait for nature to call. The first thing in the morning, right after waking up, we should drink plain hot water just hot enough to drink down rapidly. Take note that it is not coffee or tea but plain water from one to two quarts or more a day or two cups to be taken at a five-minute interval so as not to burn the passage. Along with the water intake are some exercises that could help prompt the flushing of the wastes. This process will certainly ensure the flushing of toxins and other wastes from the body; thus preventing constipation, diarrhea and other impurities from accumulating inside the body.

This is not a cure but a prevention which is more important. A cure is an attempt to heal the already existing disease whereas prevention is stopping the disease from taking place; thus keeping the systems inside the body to do their regular function. In the end, a clean internal system results to proper bodily functions, smoother skin, clearer voice and more balanced health.

Waste disposal is not necessarily through the restroom when nature calls. The skin is also one passage of flushing of the waste inside the body. Therefore, right after cleaning the internal system, we should not forget to clean the outer body part, most especially the skin. The pores could be clogged by sweat, dead cells and other toxins flushed out from the inside. And clogged pores can prevent needed nutrients from getting inside of the body to help with the proper function of the internal systems. As mentioned earlier, this problem has been looked into that is why there are a lot of health spas, health salons and gyms to help with the cleansing of the outer body parts most especially the skin. For example, a dirty and clogged face causes acne and pimples a very unsightly dilemma especially for the teens and adolescents. And so there are dermatologists who help clean and remove these problems through facial cleaning. The first and foremost technique is to use plenty of soap and warm water in washing up first thing in the morning, last thing in the evening and any time during the day. There are also other paraphernalia that can help remove and loosen unwanted dirt such as sponges, towels and pumice stones. Bathing in lukewarm water is not only relaxing as they help ease the knots of tiredness at the end of the day. Tepid water could not cause shock from too much cold therefore there is no need to fear chills. Too hot water is also not advisable as it can burn and cause stinging. The water should be about the same temperature of the body and bathing should include friction through rubbing and massaging not only to remove unwanted dirt and but to ease up knotted and tired muscles as well.

Divx Movies

Everyone in the Online Movie world is talking about DivX Movies, you may have heard of this term before, but what does it really mean?

Well, If we would ask a techie:

“DivX is a digital video compression format based on the MPEG-4 technology. DivX files can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time without sacrificing the quality of the digital video. Often used on the Internet to exchange video files.”

But for the rest of the world, what does this mean (in english please)? And even more important, how does this benefit us when we download divx movies?

Here’s how it works You have a 2 hour Movie that you want to download. You have a regular DVD file which is about 4.7 GB, if you wanted to download it that would take as long as 3 days to download!

Fortunately, a Codec was developed by a company called DivXNetworks. What DivX does is that it takes that old DVD dinosaur of a file and it compresses it into something 7 to 10 times smaller, and it maintains the high quality of the visuals and the audio on the DivX Movies.

What this means for us is that instead of a download taking 3 days or 72 hours, this process is reduced around 3 to 6 hours depending on your conection speed.

If you want to Burn the file onto a Cd and watch it on your DVD, first make sure your DVD-player supports DivX/XviD playback, then all you need to do is Burn it onto a CD or two, depending on the size of the movie, and you got yourself a Ready to Rumble movie. Just make sure you keep the copies to yourself and not distribute them illegally or sell them and you’re all set.

Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind is keeping popcorn in your house and wiring your tv with as much speakers as humanly possible :-) .

Humans are liable to experience a variety of afflictions, but they are commonly endowed with a capacity for happiness and respectability. There is no guarantee, however, that they will exercise this capacity at all times and to the maximum, whatever happens. Depression and shame remain a possibility, which increases with the severity of their afflictions and the difficulty of living up to the values that are necessary for their happiness and respectability: courage, efficiency, wisdom, and nobility.

Living up to these values is never easy, even under extremely favorable circumstances. It requires an effort of will. To make or not to make this effort is the question, central to the human existence. This question is difficult in proportion to the weight of suffering that bears on humans, while their dignity hangs in the balance. The more burdensome this weight, the more tempting it is for them to take the easy way out. The fear of losing their dignity, however, is a strong deterrent. There is no greater loss than that of dignity, save the loss of life itself. Yet, the easy way out is a very powerful temptation in extremely unfavorable circumstances. Giving up instead of living up to the values mentioned above is then deplorable but understandable. Excruciating circumstances are extenuating ones.

Amazingly enough, despite the burden of suffering that is oppressive to many, the incidence of moral collapse in the form of errant ways like carelessness, vagrancy, and crime, often accompanied by alcohol or drug abuse to fuddle the conscience is small in comparison with the incidence of worthy behavior. Furthermore, a moral collapse is remediable, except when the person concerned shows an inveterate or congenital weakness, or a mental illness that is beyond cure. On the whole, dignity can be lost and regained.

As for those who resist quitting the struggle for worthiness, they rarely do their best. In many instances their spirit is tainted with some degree of indulgence in laziness, cowardliness, ineffectiveness, foolishness, selfishness, and meanness. It has the grayness of dawn. Even those who shine like a late morning sun have a shadow of imperfection at their heels. In short, humanity has yet to fulfill its potential. While there is much courage, efficiency, wisdom, and nobility in the world, much happiness and respectability, there could be a whole lot more. The key to this rise is an effort of will.

If you need to get from point A to point B for a few days or even a month, then wheelchair van rental may be right for you. First off, you need to be able to locate a good dealership that offers wheelchair van rental. You can do that by talking to your clinician (if you have one) or by going to www.google.com and typing in the keywords wheelchair van rental + your city. Keep in mind that your city means the actual city you live in or one a major one nearby. From there, you can contact a wheelchair van rental company.

Now its important to let the sales reps there know your particular situation. They need to know the condition of the wheelchair user, whether he or she will be driving and the type of wheelchair they have. They will also need to know if other family members will be riding along.

Youll find there are many makes and models of wheelchair vans available for wheelchair van rental. Many of these makes and models are top quality as the market has become somewhat competitive. That said its very important the sales rep knows your particular situation so he or she can provide you an appropriate wheelchair van rental.

Wheelchair vans on rent can average from $80 to $120 a day. Generally insurance will not pay for you to rent a wheelchair van. Depending upon the rental company, the wheelchair van can be delivered to your residence, even with a driver. And, you may be able to travel across the country in the wheelchair van and then drop that van off at another one of that companys nearby locations. However, as with all companies, policies and methods of doing business may vary.

Hypnotizing people can be fun but should always be done in a nice way. The individual being hypnotized should never be upset by anything you have them do or say while they are in an hypnotic state. You can be the life of a party if you have willing people that will allow you to hypnotize them. People will always find out if you have done something with them that that would not approve of. Therefore stay out of trouble and keep it fun an simple. When you do it this way everyone will have fun and think you’re the life of the party.

You can also take advantage of this unique skill by having some one quit smoking or loose weight. These are two of the biggest topics that have had a proven affect on people while being hypnotized. I feel that if you are going to learn how to hypnotize people you should put your new talents to work for the good of your friends and family.

At parties you can have people who don’t mind having a little fun do funny things. If you master the art you can have them cluck like a chicken or crawl around like a mouse. They won’t know what they did after. There friends will tell them and they should laugh and not believe when they are told they did funny acts and can’t remember.

Learning how to hypnotize people is easy if you have the correct instruction. I have found one very good book that offers more than just the basics when learning how to hypnotize people. Some how to books on hypnotizing are either old or out of date with very poor techniques. This book is written by one of the best. It is not often that you find a professional hypnotist willing to share his techniques. If you are serious about learning how to hypnotize I would strongly recommend you take a look at this book. The UK is a beautiful country full of many charms, kind and polite people and a rich heritage and culture. But life in the UK can throw-up many surprises for the overseas student! So if you are considering studying in the UK this list is just for you.

First some definitions:

‘UK’ means United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is made-up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.
Britain is the main island composed of England, Scotland and Wales.

1. British people like to form orderly queues.

Believe it or not, Anthropologists have documented the fact that practically any group of British people will naturally form an orderly (and patient) queue. Beware that you will certainly feel the wrath of the queue if you try to push-in. Strangely, although the people in the queue may be seethe with indignant rage at a queue jumper, it is unlikely that any of them will let you know how angry they are.

2. The Understatement and Daily Humour

This situation contains a very important truth about British people they do not like to make a fuss. Therefore overseas students should not assume that if someone is not complaining they don’t mind what is happening often that is far from the truth. Furthermore, English people are well known to have a somewhat dry and ironic sense of humour. Indeed, much conversation has an undercurrent of humour

3 British people value punctuality

Never be late for an appointment, especially a dinner invitation. Brits are very fond of punctuality and will take it as a personal insult should you arrive late. If you are going to be late it is vital that you telephone your hosts and explain the problem, as soon as possible.

4. Drive with care

Like one thirds of the nations of this world, cars in the UK drive on the left side of the road so always be mindful of that, especially when crossing the road always look right first! UK drivers tend to be very polite. In many countries, a driver who flashes his headlamps means ‘get out of my way’ in the UK it means the opposite and is used to signal to an on-coming driver that you are allowing him to pass. Britain is a relatively small island and the cities tend to be buys, therefore driving laws are tough and strictly enforced particularly drink driving (which is a criminal offence).

5. The Weather

The weather in the UK is very changeable and it has been said that the UK can have four seasons in a single day. Many overseas students will have heard that it rains a lot in the UK. This is unfortunately true, and there can be quite a lot of wind, especially in Northern towns such as Manchester, so remember to bring warm and waterproof clothing. However, the sun does follow the rain and the UK weather is very much liked for it’s variety.

6. Security and Personal Safety

The UK is relatively safe but some simple rules can help keep you safe. Always lock all doors and windows. Collect money during day light hours. Women should try to travel with others. Taxis are often the best form and safest of transport, but always use a company that is well known.

Summary

Many overseas students enjoy their time in the UK so much that many of them choose to live there for life! It is a civilised country with a very long tradition of welcoming people from all over the world. Try the UK you are sure to enjoy it greatly.

Thus you decided to become a trainer of baseball, perhaps because your child had a team but nobody was been willing to intensify to give particular lessons or perhaps you have just a passion to work in this field. That which it reason is really is not the important factor. Each trainer wants a team of profit and each player wants the same thing but this all to find them below the total effectiveness of the team as a whole, including the trainer. A trainer is a professor and as any good professor should always seek manners to you of improving. These are the things that you want to divide with your team. You cannot even have much, if any experiment to give particular lessons but to familiarize themselves just with the foundations is a great manner of starting.

What do Franklin D. Roosevelt, Walter P. Chrysler and Charles Schulz all have in common?

According to the National Home Study Council, these distinguished men are three of the millions of Americans who studied through correspondence education, or distance learning – a nontraditional form of education that goes as far back as before the American Revolution.

Distance learning – being educated through mediated information and instruction by using technology and other forms of learning at a distance – began in a time when educational opportunity was a rare commodity. However, this form of correspondence study didn’t receive formal government recognition until the late 1800s, when New York authorized the Chautauqua Institute to award degrees via home study instruction.

In the century that followed, significant steps were taken in advancing home study. These developments included creating curriculums for distance-learning programs to follow and incorporating the most up-to-date technology.

In turn, research indicates that correspondence students perform just as well as their classroom counterparts. Over the past 100 years, home study enrollments in the U.S. have grown from a few hundred per year to more than 3 million annually.

“If you are 18 years or older, online education is the best way to get your high school diploma and not sacrifice social, family or work commitments,” said Jerome Polvay, president of Careertel, an organization that represents the Liberty High School Diploma Program. “A high school diploma will open doors for your future and help you achieve your dreams for a better tomorrow.”

The Liberty High School Diploma Program provides educational home study for adults looking to gain a high school diploma.

Postpartum depression, also referred to as postpartum non-psychotic depression is a serious condition afflicting mothers who have just had a baby. It interferes with a woman’s ability to care for the baby, and the condition attacks all mothers regardless of whether it’s their first, fifth or twentieth child. Some medical researchers believe that this condition may be caused by the fluctuation of hormones during pregnancy and after childbirth. While it is natural to feel stressed out, tired and anxious about childcare, such feelings should disappear quickly after childbirth. Postpartum depression may present itself with symptoms that include tearfulness, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts, trouble sleeping, fatigue, appetite problems, inability to enjoy pleasurable activities, feelings of inadequacy as a parent, and impaired concentration. Some women with postpartum depression may worry incessantly about the baby’s health and wellbeing, feeling that they cannot cope with the baby for fear of causing physical harm while having negative thoughts about him or her.

How To Choose Gifts?
Posted on December 28th, 2011 at 4:21 PM by admin

If you need to watch your money, go for small, simple gifts, but always do quality! Showing class is always superior to tackiness and they will feel more special and associate you with quality. A cheaply made or cheesy gift is not likely to be favorably remembered by adults, but will soon become their clutter. Better to give one or two special flowers than a whole bouquet of common supermarket flowers. Inexpensive, tasteful, quality gifts might include: homemade preserves, four or more quality cloth napkins, a bottle of wine, a well made scented candle, a living plant, gourmet rice, a local item from a recent trip such as a wheel of cheese or a bar of handmade soap, or a small box or bar of gourmet chocolate.

Have you ever noticed that arguments are rarely “won?” Even if you think you won an argument, what did you win? If there really is a loser, he at least learned something, right? What did you get? Ego satisfaction, debating practice, and diminished mind power.

Arguing Diminishes Mind Power?

There are times when things need to be debated, but most of the time, it really isn’t productive. Do you want to argue the point? What do you get from a useless debate, and more importantly, what do you lose?

One thing is certain. A person listening to arguments can learn something from both sides, but what about the participants? If your opponent makes a really good point, do you say, “Hey, you’re right!” or do you more often just look for a better argument?

Arguing too much gets you in the habit of looking for arguments more than for truth. You also get deeper into your thinking ruts the more you defend a position. In a rut and ignoring the truth?? If that doesn’t sound like it’s good for mind power, it’s because it isn’t.

Mind Power From Listening

If you say the moon is closer, and I say the sun is, one of us has to be right. If you say nurture is more important, and I say nature is, we’re both right. The first argument has clearly defined terms. This isn’t common, and even here, what’s the point of arguing?

In the second example, our arguments have to do with values and experiences. We’ve seen different things in life, and we could spend a lifetime defining “important,” or I could shut up and listen. My mind becomes more powerful with the addition of your ideas and knowledge. Listening is the better way.

To break the habit of arguing, purposely ask for peoples opinions, and listen without saying anything. You can ask them to clarify, but don’t offer one contrary idea. Do this enough, and you’ll be surprized how much you learn. Some of us are also surprized by how difficult this simple technique can be, but it works.

For the past five years my sole source of income has been profits made from trading on the forex market. Over that time period, many people, perhaps somewhat envious of my ability to earn money from home without having to report to a boss, have asked me what it takes to trade for a living. How can one arrive at a point where one feels confident enough to leave ones regular employment, strike off on ones own with no guarantee of a regular paycheck, and put what might conceivably be ones entire savings up to that point at risk in the markets?

Whether you’re a student, a full-time employee or the head of a book club, there is one task that is hard to avoid: public speaking.

Having to give a speech or presentation in front of a group is something that’s unavoidable in most people’s lives. But it doesn’t have to be a scary situation. With the right preparation, you can channel your public speaking stress into an effective, memorable presentation.

The following tips will help you further your performance when giving a presentation and keep stress under control.

* Prepare beforehand. Practicing your presentation in front of a mirror, video camera, small audience or with a tape recorder will help you feel more comfortable delivering it.

* Help yourself relax with a supplement. A sublingual spray, such as Stress and Tension, a product from the “Spray” line of all-natural remedies, may help.

Stress and Tension contains ingredients that temporarily relieve symptoms of nervous tension and anxiety, helping you to focus more on your presentation rather than the stress caused by public speaking. This spray meets all Food and Drug Administration guidelines for good manufacturing practices and was developed by doctors. For more information, visit www.thespray.com or call (866) 412-7827.

* Know your surroundings. Arrive at the place of the presentation early so you can familiarize yourself with the room. Getting there early also will give you time to test out any equipment, like a computer or projector, that you will be using.

* Keep it structured. When writing your presentation, focus on no more than three key elements. Discussing too many topics can give listeners an overload of information.

Also, to keep your presentation interesting, make sure it has a beginning, middle and end. Start your speech with an opening comment, question or with humor to grab the audience’s attention. Next, give the audience the vital information. Then finish with a strong quote, question or piece of information that will be memorable to your listeners. – NU

If you intend to go hiking this summer, or enjoy hiking as a part of your year-round activities, making sure you have all the right gear in place will help you to get the most out of your hiking, while ensuring that you still look good when you’re out on the trail.

Of course, depending on where you’re going to be hiking, you will often need different types of gear, but we’ll come to that shortly. By making sure you’ve got good hiking shoes, it will avoid typical walking problems from cropping up, such as blisters and sores, which can ruin an otherwise really great day.

Hiking Boots

Among the essentials in any set of hiking gear would definitely be hiking boots. And you will need to choose them carefully based on where you’re planning on walking. For most purposes, a good set of hiking boots should remain waterproof and provide support especially to the ankles, which can often twist easily if you’re going to be hiking for a long day or on rough terrain.

Personally, I prefer a good solid boot without anything too fancy. But really, it is a case of experimenting with your preferences and trying on a few different styles and brands until you’re happy with your choice. Once you’ve got them, spend a bit of time hiking regularly while breaking them in, and soon enough, you’ll have a pair of hiking boots that will almost feel as though they’re a part of your feet.

Pants

If you’ve ever found yourself hiking on the trail with the pants chafing between your legs, then you’ll know that getting the right pair of trousers is vital. Polypropylene is the usual material used for hiking trousers because it is comfortable and quick-drying. Aside from being comfortable, I like my hiking pants to have plenty of pockets for storing granola bars or almost anything that you need quick access to on the trail.

When choosing my hiking trousers, I usually go for the ones that have the lower legs which can be zipped off, and be converted into shorts. It might just be a small thing, but when the heat is baking, then putting the bottom of the legs into the pack and getting on with the hiking does feel great.

Shirts And Base Layers

When it comes to hiking, the base layer is probably the most important garment that you will wear, second to your boots. A good base layer will be wicking away the sweat from your skin, while making sure that you stay at the right temperature. Most important of all, you need to make sure that you’re comfortable, so try a few different materials, and make sure you’re happy with the one you choose, and it’ll look after you while you’re hiking.

Once you start moving on to shirts and fleeces, the old adage about thinner layers and lots of them being better than a small number of thicker layers is completely accurate. If you’re hiking to the really cold areas, a thicker coat can be a good addition, but most hiking trips will suffice with a few layers and a set of waterproofs.

Conclusion

Hiking gear is certainly an area where you will have plenty of choice. Just make sure that you take your time in picking out the right hiking gear, and if you look after it, it will look after you while you’re hiking.

Skateboard shed its transport equipment image of the late 40s and 50s to become what it is today, the recreational tool. The early skateboard championships were soap box derbies held in cities during that era of crude skateboards, which sometimes used to double up as surf boards too.

Skateboards as Sports Gear

With mass production becoming a reality in the 1960s skateboards underwent a lot of transformation for better; from solid wood or metals to plywood for decks, flat no shape to concavity, clay composite steel wheels to polyurethane made ones and finally single action trucks (axles) to aluminum constructed two part trucks. There is so much more in the safety, comfort and durability departments that you need to look into when buying skateboards.

Well, how do these things help? At first, the question may strike an irrelevant chord, but not so when you see the difference. Just taste this for samples: Without that innovative concavity would it have been possible for those champion skateboarders to takeoff from flat ground? Forget that for a minute, speeding along the streets wouldnt have been a reality but for the grip tapes now you find on the decks, which prevent you from slipping even as you takeoff.

Did you know, what helped easy turning at such high speeds? Of course you do your skillful foot work but the rubber cushion in between the two part truck flexes when you turn by front foot while pressing by the back foot. It is this flexibility that gives you additional turn which was harder in older skateboards.

Skateboard Ramps

If you are not on the streets you are skateboarding on the ramps. Ramps are carpentry constructions made in plywood. As you are aware, there are just as many ramp plans as you like and the simplest one is the obvious bank plan (flat plan), half pipe, quarter pipe, pyramid plans etc, all of which are named after their shapes.

Then you have the launcher ramp for the lion hearted guys and girls. Skateboarding over this launches you into the skies vertically. If you dont want to fly, you still have an option that interests you. You can ride the walls with two identical ramps placed at a distance apart.

Skateboarding Championships

Championships have encouraged many aspirants to take-up the sport and excel there. Television coverage has catapulted skateboarding to top youth sport. The most famous competition are them all is the annual X-Game Skateboard Championships. Skateboarders from all around the world take part this is event to gain recognition and fame, not to mention lucrative sponsorships and turn this one time hobby to a serious career path.

If you suffer from chronic pain in your joints, back, lower back or neck etc. then you will know what it’s like to never be able to sit down or go to bed without being in severe discomfort most of the time. It seems that what should be the most comfortable furniture in the house has suddenly become instruments of torture.

A possible solution for some people with chronic pain from Pagets disease or arthritis or other debilitating conditions is to use furniture made from memory foam. Memory foam mattresses are known to help you sleep by making the bed more comfortable and it is being used more and more in luxury hotels and even cinemas to make the experience more enjoyable.

So how does memory foam work and how can it help relieve pain?

Memory foam is a visco-elastic material, which means that it gets softer as it gets warmer. When it gets soft it allows objects to sink into it when the object applies pressure to the foam. Memory foam is also an insulator so it is possible to heat up the material in localised areas without the heat spreading to other parts of the foam. When a warm human body lays on a sheet of memory foam the foam becomes heated by the warmth of the body, just in the areas where the body makes contact with the foam. This causes the material to become softer under the body and allows it to sink into the foam. As you sink further into the memory foam, more and more of your body comes into contact with the foam until the warm, soft foam is giving you good support all over your body.

When all of your body is fully supported by the soft warm foam the pressure on every part of your body in contact with it is equal. Because there are no longer any single points of contact to cause pressure hot spots, all of your body will feel more comfortable. It’s this removal of pressure points by distributing the pressure over all of your body that gives you relief from pain.

Why do we have memory foam?

Memory foam was originally developed for NASA for use in the space program. It was to be used as padding for the astronaut’s seats as a means to relieve some of the discomfort experienced from high acceleration or ‘G’ forces. I’m not quite sure how this was expected to work in that situation however because the astronauts would be wearing space suits at the time which would insulate them from the foam in the seats. No heat no softening of the memory foam.

NASA never actually used the memory foam in it’s space craft because it gives off a toxic gas in small quantities which could cause problems in a confined and air tight space.

Try some alternatives

Memory foam mattresses are still expensive products, especially good quality ones, so it pays to try out some alternatives before changing your mattress. Memory foam pillows and toppers can easily be found and they can make a significant difference if you are having trouble sleeping. There are also cheaper materials like high-density polyurethane foam and latex foam that are also very good and might suit your pocket better.

If you have trouble with the comfy chairs in your living room then try a memory foam cushion or two. Having experienced how uncomfortable a soft chair can be when I had some lower back pain problems I know that any improvements would be worthwhile.

Monday the day
Posted on December 27th, 2011 at 6:06 AM by admin

The day of Monday is either considered the first or second day of the week. It comes after Sunday and before Tuesday. The name “Monday” comes from Mani, who is the Germanic Moon god. Monday is often considered to be the first day of the week. It is considered as this in most of Europe, Australia, parts of Africa, and South America. ISO 8601, the international standard, also defines Monday as the first day of the week. The traditional view held by Canada and the United States, have Monday as the second day of the week.

In modern culture Monday is usually looks at being the beginning of a work week. This is because it is usually on Monday when adults go back to work and children go back to school after a “weekend” (Saturday & Sunday)

In America Monday is never viewed as being a good day, as it means going back to the daily grind of another work week. A typical work week in North America is 40 hours long. That 40 hours is eight hours over five days, with normal office hours being between 9am-5pm. Because of this image as being the worst day of the week Monday’s are often made the enemies of several jokes, and comments. An example of this is Garfield, a comic strip cat, who constantly is at war with Monday. Alot of companies try to cash in on this image, and give people something to look forward to on Monday’s. Who has heard of “Monday Night Football”, or “Monday Club”?

Monday is home to several important dates throughout past and present history. Dates such as Easter Monday (hard to get that one wrong), and Black Monday, Blue Monday, Easter Monday, First Monday, Handsel Monday, Manic Monday, Miracle Monday, Plough Monday, Wet Monday, Whit Monday.

Steve Nash NBA Career
Posted on December 27th, 2011 at 12:11 AM by admin

Born on February 7, 1974, Steve Nash currently plays the guard position for the Phoenix Suns. He stands 6’3″ tall and weighs 195 lbs. While attending college in Santa Clara, Steve Nash was named as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year for two consecutive season.. His collegiate basketball career wrapped with him being the Broncos all-time leader in career assists, free throw percentage and 3-pointers made and attempted. In 1993, Steve Nash could be found playing for the Canadian National Team and winning a silver medal. In addition, he played for British Columbia in the 1993 Canada Games, which earned him a bronze medal.

The 1996-1997 season marked the rookie year for Steve Nash. As a rookie, he started only one game but later proved himself after having his 3-point accuracy noted as the second-best ever for a Phoenix Suns rookie. The following season, from 1997 through 1998, Steve Nash worked hard to improve his points per game average and became one of the most improved players in the league. The following year, which marked the 1998-1999 season was trying for Steve Nash, who suffered a lower back injury that caused him to miss the final 10 games of the year. He still managed, however, to play in 40 games and continued to improve his points per game average during those games that he participated in. Yet again, difficulty struck Nash in the 1999-2000 season when an ankle injury took him out of 25 games during the season. He appeared in 56 games that year with 27 starts and an average of 8.6 points per game.

As things began to look up for the youngster, the 2001-2002 proved to be his best ever. During this season, Steve Nash scored an average of 17.9 points per game, which marked a career-high. In addition, he was the only Maverick player to participate and start in all 82 games during the season. Fans who thought the previous years games were plentiful found themselves excited to see another brilliant season from Steve Nash, who ranked third in NBA assists during the 2003-2004 season.

The 2004-2005 NBA season marked great honor for Steve Nash, who joined an elite group of athletes to ever be named as the NBAs Most Valuable Player for the guard position. He was named to the NBA All-Star Team for the third time in his career and finally began to garner the recognition that he had worked so hard to achieve. In 2005-2006, Nash was awarded his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Award.

As the years have progressed, Steve Nash has improved his game and has proven that hard work and persistence really does pay off. After starting his NBA career with struggling points per game averages and several injuries, Steve Nash made a comeback that kept coming back season after season.

Fans who would like to request a signed photo or simply send Steve Nash their best wishes are urged to do so in care of his NBA franchise team. If you are requesting an autograph, be sure to include a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) along with your request. Letters and requests should be mailed to:

Compromised Positions
Posted on December 26th, 2011 at 10:05 PM by admin

There is no denying that the sports business these days is awash in bright lights …

Quite often, though, the same can’t be said for the people or practices involved.

The passage of time, the fading of origins and the constant superseding of slang can combine to cause some curious contemporary contexts.

To start, have you ever really thought about how pedantic the word ‘quarterback’ is? When the innovators who metamorphosed rugby into gridiron football were telling players where to stand, it was only logical to have someone placed all the way behind the line called a ‘fullback.’ By then, soccer already had two defending positions which used that term, so they surely provided the acceptable sporting frame of reference. For the gridiron game’s founding fathers to next place another player halfway between the fullback and the linemen and call him a ‘halfback’ made sense, too. But, perhaps they overdid this theme by sticking a third player halfway between the halfback and the linemen and arriving at the unfortunately obvious titling conclusion.

It only figures that such a mathematically correct — but verbally clumsy — location of a player would turn out to describe the most important position in the game. Any sports fan has heard that word a thousand times and surely doesn’t think twice anymore about what it means or how silly it sounds. The rest of the salient world, though, is left to wonder what minds like those had named their kids.

On the other hand, the venerable game of cricket doesn’t even think the word ‘silly’ sounds silly. Players’ positions in that game are also defined by their location, and they actually have a series of spots called ‘silly point,’ ‘silly mid-off’ and ‘silly mid-on.’ In this case, it’s truth in advertising. That’s because they’re placed so close to the batsman that solid contact from a full swing could result in serious bodily harm from a scorching line drive, which means that someone would have to be absolutely foolhardy to play there. Or, maybe just silly. (Just so you’re aware that all cricketers aren’t that crazy, the ‘silly’ locations are only occupied when the fielding team believes the batsman will only take defensive swings to protect his wicket.)

Certain topics just weren’t discussed in public a century ago. So, a gridiron position like ‘tight end’ or a rugby position like ‘hooker’ never gave anyone a second thought. That was then. I’m assuming those athletes frame their conversations with non-fans more carefully now.

There are times when even the sports media should think deeper about their choice of words. Sports fans often have to do a double-take at headlines being thrust before them. Here’s a recent offering from ESPN.com:

“Panel to Look at Claims Against Skeleton Coach.”

While it might have been tempting to muse if the story was about some incident after a play was ‘long dead,’ only a hardcore Winter Olympics maven would recognize that a coach for the headfirst sledding events is in some sort of trouble. The sleighs involved in that discipline acquired the name ‘skeleton’ by a logic that was similar to that of the resultant term for putting a player a quarter of the way between the fullback and the center: the sled involved is literally a bare-bones equivalent of a bobsleigh or a luge, and the engineers must have gotten to it before the marketers did. Of course, if you’ve ever seen this sport in action, you could easily believe that its moniker was derived from what was left of an athlete if he ever lost control of his sled at 70mph.

Given the apparent discord between sports terminology and the perception of those same words and phrases by the rest of the world, it’s not surprising that sometimes, ordinary words can be a cause of confusion to those who have spent their lives in the sporting arena.

In the late 1960s, two former gridiron football stars-turned-broadcasters — New York Giants great, Pat Summerall, and Philadelphia Eagles receiver, Tom Brookshier — were covering a game involving the Washington Redskins. At the time, those two were better known for socializing before the game than for preparing themselves for the broadcast. Brookshier, especially, seemed to depend on the depth charts and player profiles laid before them in the booth, rather than doing his own research.

During the course of the game, a kickoff came to a relatively unknown Redskin named Herb Mul-Key. He got a couple of key initial blocks, found a seam and scampered for a substantial return. It definitely warranted a comment from the analyst, which was Brookshier’s role.

However, he clearly didn’t know anything about Herb Mul-Key. All he could do was look for something of note on the player-bio card, and he thought he found something.

“I see,” he announced, “that Mul-Key went to No-Knee College. I’ve never heard of that school.”

Summerall’s pause was extended. Finally, with subtle exasperation, he finally made the correction.

“I believe the word is ‘None,’ Tom.”

Brookshire was truly a man trapped in sports. I guess that meant, to him, the cue card had something in common with the term for another rugby position:

It was a tight head prop.
